Enjoyed this, thanks to Everyman. Not overly difficult, but fun to work through.

Hint: some long anagrams.

Clearly an alliteration grid, which 1, my FOI, further stressed.

Unusually many excellent clues IMO. Co-COD 23, 9 and 8. Five add'l clues on the long list.

Couple of quibbles - 18 is not a racehorse. In the clue for 17, shouldn't "you" be a slightly longer word?

18: Seems likely, but I don't have Chambers (the authority) to confirm.
17: I think "for you" covers it.

18d - Chambers gives "thy" as "of thee" or "thou"- now largely superseded by "you"

17a - Chambers gives the answer as a "horse trained to take part in ??????" so "racehorse" seems okay.

Thanks, Brendan. I should have worded the above comment as "'old for you' covers it" in 17.

18 is a technical term. A horse trained as an 18 takes part in several different specific activities, and racing is definitely not one of them.
