Thanks again cruciluci. I'm glad you're wider awake than I am this morning.

Cruciluci, it's difficult to think of a way of giving a hint! Maybe if the title was Cap. Size (D) where D is the letter of the alphabet it might help?

I've found one that isn't in the 14....although there may be 'dependent' reasons for it.

Sorry, should have deleted my post - I'd figured out the items a few minutes ago and just had the PDM for 'suitably adjusted' as I refreshed this page.

Thanks for the hint though.

Cruciluci, I did not fare any better this morning, I'm afraid, so I've conceded defeat! Now wrestling with Listener 4749, and at yet another impasse :/

drxx - I am feeling very dense. I have removed the L from 10d, and am left with something I don't recognise. Is it a single word? A person? Should I be reading it backwards?
I'm adrift.

Biggus, don't read all of 10 D - just either side of the blank square(where the L was)... There's a short significant word.

Ignore the gap and look for a short word that should suggest A CAP (but not the kind Ptobes was looking for to begin with}.

Thank you both, drxx and malone.
I get it now, and I have to say that I am unimpressed with the whole puzzle. I felt the clues were too clever by half - I have never heard that meaning of 'skiver', and I'm not saying that I know everything, but I have been doing crosswords for over 50 years, and that clue seemed to be stretching itself too far, just because it could. And the endgame, now that I understand it, is plain limp. Now I'm off to find something else to be petulant about. Stamping my foot as I go.
