Got the grid filled relatively quickly, but the endgame is escaping me completely, I can't find anything that fits the parameters, so if anyone can give me a nudge, that would be lovely.

The puzzle alludes to the size of certain... (rather short in length and only 14 of them in all).

After a late start to this, I'm struggling to get on Artix' wavelength. A prompt for 18d would be appreciated: Silly mistake before old commander's order to his ADC? (8, 3 words).

Anagram of 'mistake' plus the usual abbreviation for 'old' giving a commander's order. Often heard on Star Trek TNG.

ptobes, did you have any luck this morning? I found myself in exactly the same position as you yesterday.

I now realise that wasn't the clue I intended to query (!) though the help is much appreciated. I meant: 18d Archetypal Irishman in street served up seafood delicacies (9).

The def is 'seafood delicacies', made from the usual abbreviation for 'street' going up, with a 7-letter typical Irish surname running down inside it.
