Oh dear, late to the party as always - and new to the Listener, having arrived here as an Inquisitor verteran. Can anyone help me parse (or, correct?) my 22A? Surely it must be the obvious verb for definition "puts out", being, as cross-checked by down clues, *XPEL*; and though it's ALMOST an anagram of "ef pixels", it isn't quite... anyone?

Sorry, I should have added thhat I'm assuming the last letter must be one of the clashes, as I have a surely unimpeachable "G" there from 8D, but I don't think it can be a G in 22A.

Oh my... I was SO misdirected! So there's no anagram element here... thanks Candledave, much appreciated. I'm still a little way off completing the grid (about a quarter unsolved) or cracking the theme, but I got so hung up on that one mystery... I also have 6 (well now 7, with your hint) of the superfluous words, without any idea what the "modern equivalent of the theme" might be... hey ho!

Nansen, if it's any consolation, I spent quite awhile trying to make an anagram work for that one too. I suspect we weren't the only ones.
