Brendan, 25 is first letter of patient + a 6-letter medical treatment but with the last letter removed.

A fine crossword and about the right level for me.

Assuming I’m right on the clashes I struggle with the order of the first and fifth clashes. They don’t lead to names I recognise. I wonder if I have 22 across wrong.

Anybody facing the same problem?

The preamble states that part of the endgame is to find a modern equivalent of the theme… so things were presumably different in some way in the past.

Thanks. I think I’ve now sorted the fifth - but the first eludes me. Has anybody discovered the relevant original?

@williamseal - reading your post made me realise I hadn’t got round to joining the “relevant cells”. This has revealed another nice touch to the puzzle that I’d missed until now.
You mention the clashes don’t lead to names you recognise - they won’t, they are just two letters which are probably meaningless until you have the theme.
FWIW, my way in to the theme was the campaigner’s name which was quite easy to spot.

Thanks I have the theme and the significance of the two letters. The second set is one I use often (if that’s not giving too much away). It’s the first of the set that doesn’t match anything I know.

@williamseal - presuming we’re not talking at cross purposes, some of the set do not exist now, or their name varies somewhat - the first in the set now only goes by the first letter.

Have cracked it (with a lot of googling). The first of the set had a different two word name and this explained my confusion!

All done and understood, except linking by a “line passing through relevant cells only”. I can’t work out what this means, but assume that a simple line joining the 7 cells is not what is required. Can anyone give me a hint, please?
