I made rather a meal of this by getting several of the spurious letters wrong and not seeing others. But it worked out nicely in the end. Thank you, Jack - both for the exercise and the final satisfaction!

well, that was a hard solve - especially as I got a lot of the superfluous letters wrong and had to work backwards from the instruction. But fun, and worthwhile - another excellent challenge. Thanks, Jack

Enjoyed this one, tricky but very satisfying in the end. Just one niggle in that I can’t parse the central four letters in the hedonistic clue (I know the answer and the extra letter), but would appreciate a hint as to those four letters.

the middle letters are - 3 letter "grail" after extra letter removed + 1 letter "writer"

3 letter "cheat" minus extra letter (a slang word) goes around single letter "conmen ultimately" - definition is "American"
