I think the first two letters must be a reversal (up) of a synonym for ‘for’. As in, “aim for/?? the target”.

The next three letters are ‘dawn on’ (as in to realise) and then one letter for Island.

jono@31 is correct IMO.

BTW, I would have struggled with 20, but memories of Weekend Peer Review 102 bailed me out.

Parsing 19, I’ve assumed that the first two letters are a strange synonym of “for” reversed then the next three a synonym of “dawn on”as a verb then the usual abbreviation for island.

20d may well be very much non pc, if the suggested derivation is correct.

Had to use a solver for 20D and there's a few I can't parse in the NE corner, I'll read the thread first.

Still can't really parse 6D and I can't see why van (even vanguard) translates as the single letter in 5A :/

Thanks for the parsing of 7D and 8D. I didn't like 19D either!

20D is from the etymology of the word I guess.

My hint earlier might have confused. “Van on” means take the first of what follows…

Hi Jono
"Hi Pauly, 20 is a three letter word for date inside a three letter word for dress (more usually it’s a plural)
My middle 3 letters would be an abbr for a type of scan - date???

Ah I see then Jono, van meaning "front letter of".

Pauly, it is a type of scan I suppose, I think it came up the other week as well for date (as in "long/ongoing time period").
