Struggling with 1a. I wonder if it's a phrase I don't know as I think my crossers are right. Is it Latin?

It's just an anagram, though the enumeration is a little unfair.

Oh you know what? I put my word divider as 6,6 not 5,7. No wonder I couldn't get it.

I've solved 12 across and 8 down but can't see why!

12 parses 1,3,4. The ‘key’ is (perhaps) one in front of you? Last week we had an * over the 8, perhaps this is a trend?

8 is a four letter word that goes with model, then an anagram (indicated by nuts).

Model as in "what model of car do you drive?" etc.
