I have a full grid and the eight cells. Haven't got a clue about the instruction from the down clues. I have to say that I found this crossword very difficult.

Hi Gitto,

I'm having trouble with the 8th thematic. I think it's in 32a but all the clues it crosses are normal so that just leaves the first square, but that is barred to the N,S and W so isn't combined with anything - where have I gone wrong?

I've put the down message into Google but to no avail.

The misprint is in the penultimate word of the clue and the correct letter is D. King is the usual single letter, not the one used in chess. The definition could also be "livelier".

Also, the thematic is in the 2nd cell of 32a. I now have 12 of the required 26 cells but cannot find the rest.

Gitto, they all read in the same direction. You’re missing one from Dickens and one I’d never heard of

Thanks Gitto,

I have 33d as "gat" minus its "top" giving a word for "touch" - is that not right?

Hi quisling, thanks for the tip. I assume the one you have never heard of, and the one that yet eludes me, is 8 letters long.
