Bathmatters, a couple of other posts have already spelled out in plenty of detail the relevance - I’m amazed at how much detail they were happy to reveal. Hat tip to hotelwhisky7 though who ingeniously gave sufficient info to confirm the reference and would have been of no help to all but the most knowledgeable in the subject. A perfect non-giveaway IMO. (And I offer a humble apology for asking them to reconsider their post before the penny-dropped. Lesson learned!)

I don't know if others have made the same mistake that I did initially. This obscured the route to the puzzle title. All I will say is that I had double the required number of letters in the central square.

I think I must be doing a different crossword lol. I have a full grid apart from 9d and 22d, and 35a. My removed letters is partly garbled (from 23a to 26a) and partly blank 27a-35a mostly and 9d-28d mostly) because I could not tell what letters are missing lol. I have no idea what three letter word could go in the middle, nothing makes any sense, and neither do any of the gentle hints in this thread.

Having said that, I dont usually get this close to finishing so am pleased so far!!
