If 20a were just a bit earlier, it would be thematic.
13a careful how you pronounce the first word in the clue.

Have become completely stuck middle top.

I'm assuming the def of 14a is the first 3 words of the clue but I can't parse it.

Baffled by 19a even though I have the referenced clues so I am assuming my knowledge is lacking somewhat. And 4d and 5d I don't know where to start.

David = protagonist of novel by "author of" 23.

Rocky, for 14a the second part of the clue is a cryptic alternative definition. Think of another interpretation of the answer. A bit sexist to assume this would necessarily be a man it has to be said :-)

19a is the first name 23d and also a character in the novel alluded to in 24a. 4d is 1+1+4, with the last referring to the "good" queen. 5d is an anagram with an additional letter representing a top spy.

hi rocky
the solution to 14 can refer to more than one type of place.
19 - if you have 23, google it.
4 is actually quite straightforward. def last 3 words
5 first 2 words definition

Thank you Jono and Rainman. It is my literary knowledge that is holding me back for sure.

14a so obvious when you get the pm.

Those hints have helped me over the line.

I thought this was tough because my knowledge of much of the subject matter is not especially good. But thanks to Brendan for an incredibly clever puzzle with some really good clues. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. Kicking myself for not getting some clues much sooner.

I think COD would be 23d but 24a is clever too.
