5d, "Performers thrash gutless oarsmen", the wordplay is straightforward, but can someone give me a hint as to how the definition relates to the answer, please? My only guess has to do with 'voice'.

One of the many definitions of THROW given in Chambers is ACT or PERFORM so presumably THROWER = PERFORMER

Ah, thanks, I missed that. It reads "To execute, perform" in my version, and I overlooked the third word.
