Dylan, 2d is a French woman's name. A two letter word for a space inside a three letter bird.

Thanks mathsprofrockstar, makes sense now.

For DSC, I understood the coding method, it's just that I've got a set of letters in the 4x4 that I can't do much with, including the bottom right letter being one that never usually ends a word. Are we supposed to make words in the grid in the usual way?

Dylan, In English that letter doesn't end a word, but it is in Chambers as an alternative spelling.
I also found one square had 2 possibilities for a letter.

This was probably my quickest Listener solve yet, which was as it turned out exactly what I needed this week—due to railway delays I was stuck at a Sussex train station on my way back to London and had hours to kill, and managed to finish this off. At my still-novice solving level, a typical puzzle would have remained unfinished by the time service resumed. Was pleased to have it done and dusted, it felt like I’d at least accomplished something!

After placing my 4 bars I am left with some non-words. Have I gone astray?

The small grid contains all real words, albeit a couple are obscure.

You have. Should end up with all words. Remember each letter is suggested by a real three letter word in each box, so for example EEE does not mean it's an E, as EEE isn't a real word.

I agree that it was uncommonly easy. I started it when I got on the tube at Walthamstow Central, and had finished by the time I got to Brixton, 31 minutes later.

I was bracing myself for a hellish endgame, as the clues (nearly) all entered rather smoothly and steadily, unusually for me. But felt a bit let down there - pleasant enough diversion, but no PDM to be had. I appreciate the construction, but would have been nice to have something else to do than simply find 16 three-letter words.

Still, nice to have one which doesn’t take me all week!

Don't understand how the mini-crossword works. The middle two lines and middle two columns don't make sense to me.
