Ah, sorry,Suzannah, my reply was ambiguous. I mean that all is reversed except the N so it becomes Nisse and not Issen (apologies for the answer, don't think IQ is policed as strictly as Listener!)
hi, I'm still confused re 44a - as I have it, there has to be a misprinted N in one of 43/44/45 and 44 seems the only possible candidate - but like Suzannah says nick or kink seem less appropriate than the original? Any help!?
Cranberryboat, the fact that misprints are alternate surely means it must be in 44a, and I think nick has to be the intended one. I think the point must just be that they are responsible for enforcing discipline, so they can catch miscreants, as Muraría said earlier. But I wasn’t wild about it
Thanks Quisling (& Muraria) - I can see they have the power to "kick" (off a course) but struggling to see how they might "nick" - still, it has to be! Super puzzle overall :-)
It's a long time since we've been this flummoxed. We have four unvalued entries, the phrase and understand the title. We have completed the barred off cells two give the two two-words that they are cryptically and idiomatically related to. And ... that's it. Have no idea what 3 letters to change as we don't really understand what 'the origin of the ideal MD' means. Could some kind soul point us in the right direction? I'm sure we're missing something blindingly obvious.
