Im definitely at the trudge stage - i dont think my coding skills (limited to a form of sql) are going to help. The gridfill was fine just with a calculator, and i seem to have two sensible sequences. I also have what seems to be the likely way to end the third sequence. Unfortunately i dont seem to be able to backform that sequence with what i have left - grrrrr....

I love the moment when you finish a puzzle and just take a moment to enjoy the setter's genius. it's beyond me how Elap managed to create algebraic clues which are all mathematical words, with a crafty THe =TIMES snuck in for good measure. Brilliant!

Nice puzzle. Rare for me to get through a numerical without hitting a mistake fuelled contradiction and having to start again.

Thanks Elap.

Inspiration struck - realised i hadnt used one element of the preamble which gave me the way into the 3rd sequence (and meant it was less of a trudge)!

I too marvel at how someone even begins about constructing something like this - hats off to elap (and all the other listener setters out there, both numerical and word-based) that keep us entertained.

Has anyone else had trouble with the value of o? I have only five cells to fill, including the second cell of 2ac. Now the whole thing has collapsed. I can't believe it's possible to get so far and then find it impossible to fil the last four entries.

Murky, that was the final nut to crack for me. F,W, and o in fact. Paying close attention to the possible final digit of remaining grid entries (and of o itself) helped to get it down to a manageable number of options to check.

Steve568, thanks for your response. My error was the value of W. Only two possibilities for the message, but I had the wrong one.

A typical trademark Elap puzzle. A novel way of obtaining the starting set of numbers, letter/number assignment clues related to the theme and a cracking endgame. Thanks.
