I have the 2 word phrase (1,6) highlighted. I don't see why you cannot use the same symbol in two different colours, so that is what I have chosen to do. The skill required for completing this has been used before, but I'm with smellyharry in having an intense dislike of it - but at least google only gave me one simple solution of it.

Andyp - re 2d: 'originally' = 'initially' - then change that element of a word meaning 'shakers' to another, conventionally meaning that fraction of it defined in the wp. That gives you the defined answer (not in BRB).

2d : long ago I made a big ornate object for the entrance to the location where he lies abroad for us in that place - but I think it's extremely unlikely that that information would be of any help to anybody here!

gitto. I have chosen to use 2 different symbols in BOTH parts of the sequence to indicate the duration of what they represent.
I might well be wrong.
See #11.

quixote - thanks, yes (prob should have said) i had worked out the mechanism - but still struggling on how the wp indicates that - specifically how the last few words indicate the replacement letter. i looked in chambers app for the replacement letter and couldnt see anything helpful - have i missed something?

Andyp - both the horizontal and vertical positions of the two seven-letter words/phrases are non-arbitrary.

The second thematic word, if correctly identified, will instantly give a huge clue.

Smithsax@24, I take it you mean the difference between a quarter and a half. If so, imho, that is taking things too far AND colour in the preamble should be, in both instances, pluralised. If, however, you are correct, this final end game pushes that bl**dy hare into second place as one of the most ridiculous requirements ever!!!! There has to be a limit to the cryptic allusion of what is required and I do not think there is sufficient information in the preamble to justify any differentiation within each sequence --- I appreciate your suggestion, but I just needed a rant wrt ambiguous instructions to a relatively straightforward gridfill.
