An excellent puzzle. Thank you eXternal. Lots of wonderful memories rekindled. (There is a much better alternative to the way shown by the puzzle but I’ll say no more at this stage.)

Agree with everyone else, very nice puzzle indeed. Also brings back some happy memories from almost exactly half my lifetime ago.

Took both kids there in 2008, when we lived in that part of the world: photo is still my screensaver!

gitto, I think the definition just suggests uncomfortable places to be in.
Having got both names, I'm stuck on the middle bit. Does "one letter in each row and column" mean each row/column, ie 12 letters?

I'm in the same boat as dsc. Know the second location and pretty sure I have a 12 letter way to reach it (that ties in with the title) as per the preamble. Fitting it in in such a way that leaves the final grid containing only real words and phrases is proving tricky. Particularly as the instruction appears to suggest only two options are available if the instruction is taken literally. Must be missing something...

Not sure what you mean by only two options.
I was slowed down by reading “from bottom to top” as “from top to bottom”. After all these years I should have learnt to read the preamble carefully.
Excellent puzzle.

Ah yes I see - there are only two options to replace an existing entry if you know the second location.
The obvious one is correct.

Granama1, the changes are not contiguous. But each one has individual and specific row/column co-ordinates. As you “progress” the options for change locations reduce. Since you seem to know the “way”, it should be a matter of looking along each row for a potential change that will leave a real word (or words where entries cross) using the relevant letter from your “way” and which does not re-use a column already containing a change.

If anyone thinks this is too detailed an explanation - or just too ineffably tedious! - please shout and I give Norah carte blanche to delete it.
