Awful long way for me to go yet.

21a All closed following digging (2,4).
Could be 'in toto', into = digging, but how does 'closed' mean 'to'?

47d Grass verges on Severn are dying (6)
???t??
Snitch? I can see the 'Sn' as the Severn verges but not the 'itch'.

1a might give me some useful first letters (I've only got the first letter, F):
Doddery ex-judge with SUV, one safe to take a chance at the wheel! (6,3,4)

Thanks xwordfan, don't like any of those, the foreign 'faites vos jeux' being the worst.

I agree with StrangelyBrown - this one really is appalling. I enjoy a bit of a challenge on a Saturday morning, but when the challenge is still dragging on after Sunday lunch, the humour of the situation begins to fade.

I guessed that 1A was an anagram, but as i couldn't work out which letters made it up I was defeated till Xwordfan supplied the answer.

I now have most of the top, & the left, but the south-east is pretty sparse.
Can some kind soul supply the answer to the following which might help :

33D - Bursting with energy, following fine learning guide (12)
?????????E?T

Incidentally, looking at "humour" above, why does this site apparently use an American spellchecking thingy? Does this not rather defeat the object?

Yes, a Herculean battle this week, folks! I have these answers but cannot parse them:-
7 Down - "Picture accompanied by an echo in Cineplex?" (XRAY)
52 Down - "Walk that's covered three fifths of Spain? (STOA)
41 Down - "Metal club Yorkshireman holds symbolically" (YTTERBIUM)
And with regard to 22 Down - "What experts know about "unknowns" -- answer: they're negative!" (9), I have ( O-Y-N-O S) so far. For a long time I thought it might be OXYMORONS, but the 5th. letter almost definitely is an "N". "XY" would have taken care of the "unknowns", but, seemingly, "ONIONS" may well come into the overall answer.
