Four letter word for mimic (noun) plus usual abb. for succeeded and usual abb. for that is (minus letter 'i') gives a latin-origin phrase

Ah thanks much Ukridge, my trouble was I wasn't familiar with the "succeeded" abbreviation (still fairly new to these) so I was trying to interpret that word as some kind of positioning indicator.

Just checking…I have an answer for 22dn that I’m fairly sure is correct, but it’s not in my Chambers (hard copy, 13th edition 2016). Normally this sort of thing would be signposted, no?

Perhaps it's a proper noun? I think those don't have to be in Chambers, don't need any special mention.

Ah right that’s probably it. I wonder what qualifies a proper noun for inclusion then? E.g Iraqi

I'd appreciate a help with 1a, despite Brendan's thinking aloud at post 12, it's still a mystery to me. -Puffin's (who is the setter) in competition to trail good rope with soft centre. (5)
Also a tip for 7d welcome.
Measure of pure gold certainly accompanied vocals. (7)

For 1a the definition is the last 4 words (bearing in mind it’s an across clue). “Competition” is 3 letters, losing one and including Puffin, all after the usual “good”. 7d, the US spelling of the first 4 words starts the wordplay and you’ll probably be able to go on from there…..

1A - all fairly conventional abbreviations or synonyms - but an unusual four letter word for rope, and thematic. Three-letter word for competition, missing a letter.

7D - way of expressing purity of gold, spelt out, missing a letter. Unusual word for sure or fine. Answer Japanese-derived.

Re 1a, note that it's 'Puffin's', and not 'Puffin'
