Could anyone explain what I'm missing with 1D? Obviously limited possibilities once the crossers are in, but I can't see how any of them have anything to do with the clue.

Thanks Jono! It never ceases to amaze me how often I miss hiddens. Still, 'extract' is a rubbish definition. It's a paste!

... or does the &lit nature of the clue mean that Everyman can get away with saying 'semi-solid' is the definition? My head's starting spin!

I can't parse 25a though answer can't be much else .... can anyone help?

Phil, I suspect the whole clue is meany as a literal description, with the “?” acknowledging that perhaps it’s not a perfect description, but close enough

Good puzzle I thought. Got held up in NE corner after I’d lazily put Quasimodo’s actual job in for 8d. Got there in the end. 24a confused me at first, couldn’t see how ‘announced’ worked for the first word until I remembered that not everyone is northern like me!
COD 19d - but I needed to think about it to get the parsing.
