Yeah I worked it out in the end (which was initially wrong of course, last letter was incorrect).

I usually go "off on" 26A rather than being in a state of "being on" one ;)

I did however, learn what a cobiron was ;)

Oh, and the Spoonerism was rubbish I thought? Does it make any sense at all?

Otherwise it was a good puzzle, harder than usual, some good clues.

So it's assuming American (boo, hiss) pronunciation for the first word and French(? or something) pronunciation for the 2nd word in the Spoonerism? What madness is this?

No, the Spoonerism is different because, instead of switching around the initial letters of the words, in this case you have to put the whole last word first then apply some verbal gymnastics to the first word to get "chosen time"

I have now worked out what the Spoonerism is! I was only Spoonerising the first letters rather than the first syllables, it all makes sense now.

Problem might be that the # of letters doesn't match; solution is (4,3) but the Spooner fodder is (3,1,4). I arrived at a phonetic solution by swapping the first 2 letters of the solution's words.

But as you point out it's the whole second word... not the kind of Spoonerism I like to see really. That was a weird one (although the answer was obvious from the crossers).
