The setter's just commented that there was an erroneous transposition of descriptors in the published annotated solution. So Durham is the presenter and Derbyshire the journalist. I was convinced by the argument that the county of Durham's name includes "county" and therefore couldn't be right - though Chandler argues against that quite convincingly on 15 sq.

Hmm... That went in quite easily, apart from mistakenly choosing S for my missing letter in 16d. But I can only see four unpleasant fellows - three obvious and one middle-theme-worded between 1ac and 12/13 across, which seems clumsy.

Possibly there's an unpleasant fellow in 1ac 4ac (new to me, if so, but plausible), which would make 12/13 a short UF. But then my sense of fair play would suggest the final UF should be in 22/23ac... Are the two UFs I'm missing very obscure?

Sircrispin, I didn't know the one in the top row but it's in Chambers. The one in 22/23 comes from the Muslim religion. Probably not that well known though I've seen it in barred puzzles from time to time.

Thanks loge, I shall keep staring at 22/23, but will probably resort to Google

22/23 usually has a different vowel at the beginning

So easy, and yet, oh dear! I couldn't parse 28A, but, no problem, as it has to be what I thought based on the "removals." But is 12/13 only four letters? And do we just omit the necessary letters when entering our answers? (I suppose we must).

28 probably took me longer to parse than the rest put together. It's THE + a 6-letter word for way, method, fashion with the word for an edge (of clothing, usually) removed. Sneaky.

I've got 12/13 as four letters, yes. I don't submit so I'm not sure what he procedure for that would be.

Gosh that was very gentle! Lasted only as long as my afternoon cuppa. Like Pendragon, I assume we enter what’s left - do we include spaces?

I entered the remains and left spaces. . I believe they're checked "by hand", so if you have the right letters in the right order, should be OK. Thanks, loge, don't think I would have parsed that in alll the time that's left to me ...

Only my second Genius and I liked this a lot. The first and last words of the coded message revealed themselves early on but I struggled with the middle word due to the letter from 15 (also to interpret it in terms of the grid).
Thanks to Loge for help with 22/23 which I didn’t see, I did wonder if there were any in the downs.
When I submitted I put the subtracted letters in brackets, like this “ABC(def)”, no idea if this is correct.
