The easiest for quite a while, but I am unhappy about the superfluous letter at 15d

yes, virtually a write-in as far as clues concerned, except ... I have all the deletions and the first and third word of the instruction but can't decide if the definition in 14 is the first or last word, which together with one of 3 possible extra letters in 15 (as buzzy seems to have experienced) will give me the middle word ...

Prospero, I worked out the middle word from the way the thematic items are entered in the grid. There are indeed 3 possibilities for the extra letter at 15, and I think two valid candidates for the one at 16.

In 14 the definition is the first two words.

Nice puzzle. Easy, but I prefer that to having to match up obscure pairings with several possibilities that contribute nothing to the final grid, as we did last month. If you look at the Fifteen Squared blog it seems the setter and the Guardian annotated notes disagree!

I wondered that, Prospero (that you'd mistyped, not that you're an idiot!). I think the first word is the definition, with abbreviations for left and river containing the sheep. It's a rare case of a word providing the extra letter but contributing nothing to the actual entry.

thanks for the clue, loge - I did have the wrong letter at 16, thinking it was the START of the blemish (not the end), so the def at 11 must be the first word, but it seems clumsy to have to add a letter and then take it out ...
And, yes, after all the controversy last month, it seems we were right to be confused.
15 squared has Adrian WILTSHIRE (actor)
Guardian annotation has Adrian DURHAM (journalist) and Victoria DERBYSHIRE (presenter)
Chandler (the setter himself) says it's
Adrian DURHAM (presenter)
Victoria DERBYSHIRE (journalist) and
Joey ESSSEX (actor)
This was the conclusion I finally came to - though Chandler admits the Essex description is poor and inappropriate.
