thanks loge - i got the wp, just no idea why the first four words are the defn, based on what chambers app entry was...

Right, off to recheck the across clues!

loge - just looked at 38 chambers entry more closely - penny dropped!

Need a nudge here. Haven't begun to sort out the endgame but have a pretty full grid. Short of answers to 44 across and 38 and 39 down. Cant parse a few (45 ac and 6 down for instance)but hoping they will be clearer when I've identified the extra words and the'remainders'. Some encouragement would be appreciated. Ta

Of course I've just solved them. On to the endgame. No doubt I'll be back
