I’m grateful to all who attempted this little distraction! It looks like most have finished now, so here’s the solution…

Definitions are underlined
1. Tense story (4) - tale

6. Wither 4 perhaps (6) - divine

8. Doctor given skin treatment (6) - DRINKS
Dr + (skin)* (no definition)
9. Old silver (5) - aging

10. Symbol of respect confused setter (5) - totem

11. Very best dispenser of 8, almost (7) - optimum

Thanks for an excellent puzzle Jono.
I would have solved it much sooner, but I was looking for a drink in every answer, and some were" related to drinks". I found the last 3 letters of 11 in Chambers 12th.

Two errors for me:
2 I had em BAR rassed (bar)
7 I had avatar, but chose VAT for the wine vessel

‘Ava’ is a little obscure. It’s made from peppers apparently! Bradford’s lists it and Chambers references it under ‘kava’.

Thanks Jono, even though drinks are my specialist subject I only got 9 of them. I too thought winebar for 2 and lager for 13 although I did get chaos. Pleased the Pope is the ECB`S Cricket ambassador 🏏

Excellent, jono. Thanks for that. I didn't get 2 and 6 and a couple of your nudges helped.

Was hovering between crust and skirt for 14 for a little while but pleased to see that the one I decided on was correct. Crust doesn’t really mean border after all.

Got the rest although as I mentioned was torn between optimum and optimal. Wasn’t totally sure if Jono had thrown in almost as a double dealer for malt whisky as well. But I did find mention of some beer that I had never heard of on google so stuck with mum.

Thanks jono.

Thanks for a great effort, Jono. I also wrote in 'lager' to start, and spent some time trying to parse 'omnipotent' with an anagram of 'ten' at the end, before I reached #10.
I hadn't heard of 'ava' or 'mum' but they are in Bradfords ....
