Hi Roof,

23a - Notice that the clue includes "me" - who could the setter be talking about 😜

15d - Is an anagram with all the letters in the clue (your letters are wrong)

1a is one of the more famous (infamous) characters. Think of a synonym for shoddy stuff and then insert a character representing the unknown. 13a is a four-letter character, again famous/infamous, in a reversed four-letter word for countryside. If you got 16a and 24a, you don't need to look far to get 22d. 6d is another less sympathetic character with a one-letter addition ('inspiring').

Many thanks Brendan and Jono

One out and two in. Just four to get now, three of which are "characters". 1ac,2d,22d and 28ac. I shall go away and think some more.

I forgot to send this before eating my dinner. As a result, I've now finished. I'm not sure about the parsing of 28ac and I don't undersatnd why I didn't get 22d much earlier.

So, once again thank you for your help. Rest assured I don't send it in. I got the prize (the book) ages ago. They must have a lot of them. It is/was a bit tedious.

The theme puts some people off. I always assume relative ignorance on the subject and am amazed by people who seem to just absorb it. The same with spelling. But this does mean I would be less bored on a radio 4 desert island, and I get the feeling that the only true expert has been dead some four centuries.

Cheers to the setters for all their leisure well applied.

roof, 28 is an anagram of a truncated ("endless") word in the clue, defn. "1 or 2, perhaps". Paul also got me with that one.

1 is a variant spelling of US slang (Yiddish, I believe; I know a spelling with an added "c") for "shoddy stuff" surrounding a variable (letter). The Yiddish etymology might be a further hint.

I found this the easiest Saturday Guardian Xword I've done for quite a while, except for 28a, which had me totally stuck until I saw Brendan's post about an American spelling. I never knew that wasn't the only spelling. Once I corrected that, the dread 28a was no trouble. I've been looking at this forum for a little while now, and I worked out what FOI and LOI were fairly quickly, but, while it seems fairly obvious what COD means, I can't figure out what words it stands for. Anyone put me out of my misery?
