He is indeed, johnTO - and only half by the themed writer too - but something very significant happened at a performance....

It is one of the least-performed but I think ChrisE is saying that its first performance was historically significant.

I guess they don’t plan on performing it too authentically at the current site.

Hi everyone

Another hard one! I started late as usual and I think I have the theme with 17ac, 16ac, 26ac and 27ac. I've now looked through the dramatis personae in my complete works, but to be honest it isn't much help and the book is so old with such thin pages, I think I'd have been better off googling.

I think I'm getting weaker by the week!

As well as the hints I've picked up from the thread, please can I have a hint for 9d. I think I have the second word. 19ac might help as well. I always do better when I've got more letters to go at.

hi roof
Strangely, 9d was my first one in ! I saw one man wearing one only yesterday in Kingston, walking around the pedestrian area advertising something which I've already forgotten.

Hi Roof,
9d is one word for squeeze and one for committee split 8,5. The definition is literally an (old fashioned now) means of advertising while walking around
19a is a cooking method, four letter fish followed by a four letter part of a fish with single last letter from skewer inserted

I liked this puzzle, but if you're looking for an alternative (or supplement), Rodriguez aka Picaroon is in the Indy.

In a strange crossword coincidence, today's Indy puzzle by Rodriguez (aka Picaroon, Buccaneer) also contains a Spooner misdirection a la 7.

Many thanks Geeker and jazzgirl

I have managed to get these, but I'm stuck on quite a few. I'm wondering if my answer for 15d is correct as I'm not having any luck with some of the crossers and I can't parse it. I have B?L?I?T?C.

I thought I'd have no trouble with the remaining theme clues, but no. I've found a list of characters in my crosswrod companion, but I can't fit any to 1ac, 13ac, 22d or 6d and I can't find the South American City for which I have the following crossers. ?A? I???O. Could it really be Sao Imeto? I've never heard of it and can't find it in my atlas. Grrrr
