32a - How do the last 2 letters come from "violet"? I can see it looks like an abbreviation but it's not in Chambers.

I think VI is just a nickname for the girl's name VIOLET.

I didn't need to resort to my ODQ since googling the two
most well known "consequences" led me to a Wiki page which gave all eight as well as the original source. After fifty years of solving I have only recently come across the "preposterous" device, which I think is very neat. I hope that it doesn't go out of fashion in the way that "a bit of a kip" (two letters) seems to have done.
