Quite a quick one today which I appreciated as I can’t get on with the day until this has been completed over brunch! COD 1d, FOI 6, LOI 19d - although I’d guessed the answer and was really just struggling with the parsing. I hadn’t come across ‘specs’ before - but it’s meaning was blindingly [or not ;)] obvious when I realised!

Enjoyable, sufficiently taxing, though I was slow on the uptake with a few: LOI 11a was clever, COD 23a was fun.

Can a newish member of this forum ask the old hands about 10a? Is there a conventional way round to put the solution? Or is there a signifier in the clue that I missed? Or must one wait to get one of the crossers?

Puzzling over this (not for the first time) reminded me of first trying to learn arithmetic at school (and not doing very well). This was because I took the teacher literally when she said the sign of the number was 'in front' and understood this to mean following it on the line! I always wondered whether this was because I was left handed!

In my experience you will see that type of clue written both ways and without a crosser it’s sometimes not possible to know which way round it is intended to work

I haven't done this yet but I've had a quick look and I think your I is wrong.

It looks like a homophone of a 5 letter "one creating stain" with the definition being "dreadful"

OK then my 1a is wrong but I have a very feasible answer. Thanks. I'll press on.
