Ah! It's a pretty obscure musical instrument. It is an anagram, including CH for "check".

Thank goodness for this forum. Was in despair having solved barely a quarter of the clues, but reading the earlier references to a theme - which I would never have spotted - gave me the way in. Clever puzzle or what?

It took me 3 days to solve this without needing help for any of them. It might have been quicker if I noticed the theme, and the theme also turns up around the 8 letters in the ring in the middle I noticed as well (2 "new" YEARs).

An excellent puzzle anyway despite the long solve time.
