OK, I've written in my unparsed 22d as it fits all the crossers. I'm just left with 26d. I can think of a word that fits the definition of "very bad", but can't fit it with the play, despite looking up a list of characters!

Thanks jono. I think I see the exchange now - is it biblical?

Haha, yes I looked up the characters also in vIan. But it’s a letters trick, what do Romeo and Juliet have in common? One letter, after a five letter word for part

Thanks jono - rather a weak way of giving the final letter!

Happy New Year all from a balmy Southern Italy. Like many I've been hauled up in the SE. I thought once I got the theme all would be well. But enjoyable for sure.

Is 25d a regular word or one derived from a figure of speech like they sometimes throw in?

25 is a real word, though a synonym is in more common use.

Hi everyone

I wasn't expecting a paper today, so arranged my only social event of the entire holiday period for this afternoon; to play a game of Tiny Towns with my neighbours. So I don't expect to be in touch today and may not even start it, especially after reading here how hard it is.

I too struggled with the SE corner - but most of it fell in once I’d spotted the theme. Still stuck on 24d though if anyone could give me a hint…

The definition in 24 is cunningly concealed. Build it up from its parts.
