Hi Connie,

34a - 5 letter "further" with the "second afternoon (abbr.)" dropped and replaced by "English" then 2 letter "grammar school" - definition is "steps getting on" but you can ignore 'steps' and it will still be the definition - I think.

Sorry Connie, with the ending being an S I think "steps" is needed.

That "E" required from 34 across has flummoxed too many of us for my liking. I'm still not totally convinced, but have no other suggestions!!

Thanks all. A really enjoyable puzzle full of ah-ha moments but 34a surprisingly clunky. Now looking forward to tomorrows puzzle. When I explain to friends that doing these puzzles is like cleaning your brain with a brillopad some even understand!
