I also agree with Asetter's major points I can't see how a select panel of people allowed to give hints would work in practice, whatever the merits of the idea. It would be a nightmare for Admin to ensure that only the "right" people answered pleas for help. I suppose there could be two threads, one for questions and one for hints, the latter having access restricted to the select few. I can think of some contributors here (not me!) who'd qualify for the panel, but whether they would want to do this is another matter. They would have to be "on duty" at given times and that could easily become a chore.

As I said before, it's a shame this discussion has become necessary at all due to the impatience of a small minority.

Norah, you state that that your name is "crossword clue solver", however this thread is "crossword help forum". Maybe if you keep the "HELP" to this thread and put the "ANWERS" elsewhere, "solution wizard" would seem apt, then that may stop all the arguments about the positives and negatives. I do sympathise with you!

Not one of your better suggestions, gitto - perhaps you should have tried 'solution wizard' before you made it (I got absolutely nowhere putting ploughty's question to the wizard).

Thank you all for your supportive comments and otherwise. I'm just surprised that nobody suggested I remove the cushion from the fence on which I was sat.

I think the majority understand that I am trying to do my best to run the Forum in as friendly a manner as possible, at the same time putting up with the foibles of those who want no hints, want massive hints, want no answers, want answers - you get the drift.

I'll continue in my own sweet way to try and keep everyone happy but it 'aint easy😂.
