That's an interesting twist on the square brackets conundrum - it seems putting them inside quotes nullifies the italic function.

2 queries - does 14d have an extra letter?
What is the fourth letter of 17d? There are alternative spellings and the word play doesn't seem to make it clear whether its the earlier or the later one.

Aspria, yes 14 needs an extra letter.
Not sure about 17d. I went for - 'record' = A LOG, but far from convinced this is right.

I went for the French 'idee' around 'log' inside OU (Open University) so that the university works as a container - 'held in'.

Can anyone help with 23 down? It’s the only one I don’t have and it’s had me stumped for days. I seem to have an R left over from the superfluous letters but can’t seem to place it
