Thanks again, prospero. I'd missed the fact that I had only identified 15 associations so stay behind after school for me on that one. What was throwing me about the wordplay was that 4/5 of the solution was there in plain sight.

Is there an extra word in 17d?

Where does the extra letter come from that i need to fill in 23d?

bunty - 2 extra words in 17. Extra letter in23d is the second.

23d sorted...

the extras in 17 belong to 22 ... I had to use Chambers to get the basic answer to 22.

Yes, it looks like 'swirling' is a reversal indicator but there's no need for one in 13 because 'it' = s(ex) a(ppeal) (malone's bugbear again!).
