The remaining association I was talking about is the grid entry at 19 across with an extra word in the clue for 27 across. I probably went wrong somewhere, as I can't find a logical link between those 2 words (a word in the clue for 21 across would have been a perfect definition, but it is used in the wordplay for the grid entry). But as I said, it didn't prevent me from completing the grid.

I'm all done (I never submit my solutions) but I have a couple of queries.

13a I have the solution and can see the definition but can't quite get the wordplay to work (I can see some of it). Not sure what the first word contributes.

17d Have the solution and I'm happy with what the first 3 words in the clue contribute. But I can't unravel the rest of the wordplay from the remaining words of the clue (other than a 3 letter component). [trying not to be too spoilerish here]

manu - the word you want is in 16.

simon - first word of 12 is partof definition - last 2 words belong to 6.
17 first 3 and last 1 letter give you D's notion.

Thanks, prospero - I can see 17 now. My other query was 13 not 12 ;-)

13 - first word belongs with 8.

oh, and in 13 "it" is the conventional 2-letter abbreviation
