I've checked it, there's no typos on my part.

The only thing I can think of is that inbreeding, while it would definitely multiply the species, wouldn't progress the species ie (not) going forth - perhaps others have better ideas.

I saw this and thought it was probably just trying to be a cryptic definition.

Yes, I think it's just a general cryptic clue. Inbreeding leads to degeneration, not advancement.
