1a a " speak easy" is an illegal "joint" for selling drink and a reeefer is also an illegal "joint (drug)

Someone may have a better answer for 1a but that's all I could see

1a, Reefer is an old term for a midshipman.
"Mr Midshipman Easy" is a novel by Frederick Marryat. ??
