Hi malone
Why does "call of hounds" define THE SOUND OF MUSIC? I'm puzzled!

ChrisE, it doesn't really - I just meant that the sound of music (bugles?) calls the hounds in hunting and also the sound of music enlivened the hills in the film. I shouldn't really use, attempt to use the technical terms - I avoid them as much as possible!

12 NO - Japanese drama ( though it should be NOH), TONY - TV award, OUR NELLY - northern way of talking about a relative (a bit weak)

7 N - finally learN, then A LAY (poem) backwards

8 BARD backwards? Shakespeare (The Bard) is sometimes referred to as the "Swan of Avon", but it seems rather loose

OUR NELLY obviously refers to a close relative called Nelly!

That reminds me. A mouse goes into a music shop and asks for a mouse organ. The shopkeeper says "that's funny, you're the second mouse to ask for a mouse organ today!"
"Ah, that must have been our Monica"....

12 To, meaning closed, pops up often - think of asking someone to 'pull the door to' , add Do, party. To-do, commotion, fuss etc.

27 A. Chambers says Thermidor used to be the eleventh month of the French revolutionary calendar. Lobster Thermidor is a pretty well-known seafood dish.
