Thanks, Whetstone. It's well seen that these are 'previous puzzles' - I feel some of the clues must have antique status! The word 'Cove' pops up in clues occasionally, but I think Rip, Poor horse, passed out of usage many years ago.

9 the original meaning of camera is just room (or chamber) when a judge hears a case in camera, he does so without an audience. we get the term from camera obscura (dark room), in which an image of outside could be projected on a wall by way of a lens (or pinhole?)
