Got a name, but who is she?. I am pretty familiar with the theme, but I can't place her. There was a barmaid who had a thick arm from pulling pints all day!!

I assumed the name was used by the setter as a representation of the victims rather based on a character in the book?

I agree with muraria. I don't think any of the victims were named in the book. The possible name must have been chosen because of the way it allows the 4 letters from the diagonal to ignore the book title's advice, thus achieving the endgame.

Thanks, both. I was clearly overthinking things. I was also led up a blind jigger by the title of Joan Le Mesurier's autobiography.

I too think it's a random name, and it's the one I expected to find from the four-letter "addressee". Still took me flipping ages to see it in the grid though!

Two victims are named in the book - Jocelyn Knockersbury and Freda Volkinsky. I can't find either in the grid.

I also noticed 'oops' on a diagonal, which distracted me for a while.
