Sorry if it's a bit early to be asking - but does "emptying three cells and transplanting their contents" mean that some cells end up with more than one letter in them?

I'm working on the assumption the moved letters replace the letters in the new cells, but may well be wrong. I have yet to find a thematic way of moving the letters that yields a plausible 6-letter name.

Do you think the letters are to be removed from the 4 letter word on the diagonal. (which I have as the first word from the title of the mystery)?

Thanks loge. I can get a name starting at 17 but it would need to have two letters in one cell. And it wouldn't really go in the direction I'd expect it to. Will stare for a bit longer.

The nearest I've got is almost a name which includes the four letters of the "addressee", starting with the last letter of 15. Problem is the first letter isn't what you'd expect. I've found some people on the net with this name but it's hardly common and I don't think that can be it.

...and not starting at 15 - it's a fairly common name.

...the movement is better described by the title than by 'removed'.
