Thanks all - didn’t like that clue as the answer was hard to find! Oh well, really enjoyed the rest of it so far, but the south east corner has proved tricky - going away to ponder 20d which I think is the last special clue (it’s either that or 28a) which are my last 2 - have an answer for 28 from the clues on here but can’t parse it

neither 20d nor 28a is a paired ckue. 28 is just a cryptic definition

Just joined the forum after my first read through of all the clues. I got far more answers from my first read through than normal, but no "pairs". Thank you Mikey and Chris for giving a broad hint for 26ac. I'd googled sea snail and got nowhere. I'd never heard of it.

I'm off for second read-through now and will be back for some hints later. I'm relieved to hear that the "pairs" are of equal length.

i think 18 is an anagram, but i didn't check it very carefully!

Yes, 18 is an anag. Anagrind is "knotted", anagrist the following 3 words.

Hi William, ‘back to front’ is an indicator to move a last letter to the front…

It's a common word for hell with the last letter moved to the front.
