I have the three symbols but your nudge tells me what the preamble does!

Novice - grid staring did it for me (once I reached the conclusion that the remaining highlighted cells could not be contiguous with the symbols)

Isn't this the compiler who usually hides messages in diagonals?
I just can't see anything.

Lumen, I don't know if the diagonals are usual, but they're not in use today. I treated it as a wordsearch, but began by reading down the columns. That worked...a couple of things emerged.

Easier option on this occasion...

The grid staring took me longer because I was fixated on the idea that the cells would be contiguous. Not the case; as Malone put it, no diagonals, just columns.

Oh! I see the LH side ones.

Could someone help me with one down please? I have an answer but it seems to bear no relation to the clue.

abbrev for first 4 words around synonym for captain + Obselete word for pranks = head (as a slang term)
