Thanks. It was the 'native of Van' bit I could not understand. I was looking for a place called Van where this lived.

It is a place called Van where an example of this lives, and is named for.

It’s in Eastern Turkey.

All finished, and I thought that this was the easiest we've had for a while. However as is often the case I have a couple of stubborn loose ends that need tidying up. Please can someone put me out of my misery and explain the following:

1. Where the first letter of the answer to 15d come from? I can parse the rest of the wordplay but not that letter.

2. Similarly for 19d I don't see where the first two letters of the answer come from.

Thank you in advance!

Bobblycollins, thanks for the tip, but I have to disagree with the sentiments - I really enjoyed STC.

My final quandary is 26ac. I have a word that fits the definition (presumably the last four words) but it's only 5 letters. I'm not clear what's going on

Thanks again

For 19 down the first two letters are an abbreviation of a Latin word. The abbreviation is given in Chambers.

Novice, you should have three cells containing symbols. You then need to use these to express a basic fact
