Thanks everyone for your help re 8D. To my shame, the assistant’s name was new to me … but you live and learn thank goodness. Enjoy what’s left of your weekend.

The basic law of springs is named after him: F = kx, where k is a constant dependent on the spring.

8d was my COD!
I hadn't heard of the expression for 11a or the synonym for tantrum, which I assume is an abbreviation.
Mostly enjoyable on the whole though, and you can't please all of the people all of the time!

Thanks PS for that explanation (@ no 26). I lazily assumed the 'half hearted' referred to the last three letters, as that is an abbreviation. I know about 'heartless' meaning taking out the middle letter, or letters, but I don't think I've come across 'half hearted' for taking out one middle letter out of two. Learn something new every day!

Chrise, (@ 27) I did think of I've, but the tense was wrong so I dismissed it. If you replaced Everyman with I've, then the clue would read ...I've suppressing.... Surely it should have been Everyman's suppressed instead?!
All in all, a clumsy clue I thought.

I thought it was the worst clue of the day too.

8D my COD because it's maths innit... his law is very useful for many things in computer physics sims/animation etc. e.g. cloth simulation (make it out of lots of springs).

I was just reading on Wikipedia that Robert Hooke first stated his law in 1676 as a Latin anagram!

So he was like a 17th century Everyman :)
