Apparently he wasn't that short and Newton was on good terms with him when he wrote that, but they fell out later on.

The £2 coin featuring the quote on the side also features a ring of 19 interlocked cogs, which is useless because they wouldn't be able to turn... you need an even number of interlocked cogs in a loop in order for them all to turn (since alternate cogs in the chain turn opposite directions). Although you can make an odd number of cogs turn if you arrange them in a Mobius strip - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWQwrU1qUrc

Although the spring scientist reported his discovery by means of a (Latin) anagram so that is appropriate for this forum ;)

ceiiinosssttuv (anag): Ut tensio, sic vis
"As the extension, so the force."

I enjoyed three quarters, and thought there were some fun clues. I did especially like 8d and 18d. I also wonder if Everyman has been audited recently?

However I didn't enjoy the NW corner much. 3d was a bit painful to parse, and included a word I'd not heard used for rant before. And where do the last 3 letters of 9a come from? What am I missing here?

Last 3 letters of 9a a bit clumsy IMO: 1 ("tense") + 2 ("on"), both common abbrevs.

It would make more sense to me if the clue ended '... tense about Parisian hill'

Hi Warden,

Last 3 letters are single letter "tense" + 2 letter "on"

Nope, that was 9A from yesterday's Prize ;)

Presumably it is T for tense and RE for "on" (regarding).

Thanks geeker, glad to see I'm not the only one who thought it clumsy :)

paradigmshifter if we're discussing 9a's generally then I must say 9a from Everyman 3907 was quite nice 'Attaches blame when returning veg (7)'

;)
