Yes but my problem is I cannot fine a traditional verse that contains those words and no others. They spread in prose frequently.
I am probable being pedantic but I would be happier if the preamble said “the other words in that line of the verse are cryptically represented”.

Should read before I post. Fine = find. Spread = appear.

Yes, I see what you mean. I just ignored the other words and used the relevant snippet.

Hi Smithsax, I took it to be a cryptic too. The subject was 3x something (although, strictly speaking, I'd say the end game would actually indicate 4x).

smithsax, your 4 5 then 4 5 2 6 is correct but your hero certainly isn't 6! (if I read you correctly). Look at post 17 very carefully, it gave me a nudge.

There is a relevant 6 letter word in some versions of the verse (not the hero's name) and i think that's what Smithsax is referring to?

Yes the hero is more than 6 letters. The word in brackets suggests x3.
I think there may be a traditional verse that goes -
4 5 (hero)
4 5 (hero)
4 5 (hero)
4 5 2 6
Remove the hero’s and this works perfectly. The only trouble is I can’t find it in google.

If you look up the hero on Wikipedia, using the full version of his first name rather than the familiar abbreviation with which we're more familiar, you'll find the verse.

Yes I found that one.
How is the word twice represented in the grid? If it is that each line gives a repetition of the second word then the last 4 words should be represented 3 times. It does not work.
