Second part is probably hidden (partially) with Nut as def.

The clue splits after gas ...H is extra.
regular letters of thread nutted ..anagram ...gives synonym for gas/chatter
other answer is hidden in the clue

Two threads were posted at the same time, that's never happened before. I have combined them into one thread.

Pleasant solve. Full grid, hidden hint found early on. Can guess the 'earlier situation'. Still staring at the grid trying to work out what to change. 😁

Reply by Muraria

I haven't actually changed anything. I also have an 'earlier situation' that leaves real words but I'm not wholly convinced.

Reply to Muraria. It does say 'changes in the grid which produced the endpoint' but, at the moment I don't even know if I have the two halves the right way round!

Thank you for 3D. Anyone able to help 7a. Retiring Hoy’s to set things in order before counterblast to ultra irregular weight stays on cycle. (I did think B was the discarded letter….but may be wrong) (5)

Ah, thanks granama, I see what you're saying but I'm really not sure. I took the hint as relating to changes from an earlier situation (which we have to write separately below the grid), with the final grid as the endpoint. Not as ***** as it could be!

You're right with the b. Scottish to tidy reversed after a one letter representing Latin, before for the first half (counter). The second half is a bit convoluted. I'll see if anyone has a better parse than I have.

Re the second half of 7, definition is last two words. Answer is an adjective, stays is a container indicator referring to the irregular weight holding the last letter of ultra.

Muraría, I agree that the completed grid shows the final version. The 12 letters written beneath were removed from the earlier version. No further changes are needed

Penny dropped with more of a groan than a doh! A slightly disappointing end to a rather nice puzzle I feel.
