I'm still struggling with muraria's five letter word at 7.
Is it a theme word?

Not sure which of the words you mean, Nelson. I gave the parsing for the second half at #9. The irregular weight is from the Eastern Mediterranean, and in Bradford’s. Answer is an unusual adjective derived from a normal word meaning a list

Sorry quisling, I was referring to the five asterisks in the post. it was just a little joke - maybe not very funny.

Hi muraria - I've finished the puzzle, and for the 'earlier situation' I have an ononomatopoeic phrase. Is that somewhere in the place that the spelled out hint refers to?

Hi Nelson, yes to your first question, no to your second

Despite #9 and #12, I still can't see 7a part two, quisling. I have ??T?E - have I gone wrong?

Sorry ignore that. My E was wrong, now solved. (7a, not the puzzle!)

I've got a full grid and what I think is the "earlier situation" but I just cannot parse these two clue ....

18a - Ally yielding volume’s lost trick of painful constriction (6)

My answer is a "painful constriction" and it looks like at least part of it is a word for "ally" minus "volume" but that's as far as I get.

9d - Defender against Duncan’s descendant broken by man (8)

I have a "defender" but that's it! It seems to be suggesting a Scottish word for descendant" around a word for "man" but there is definitely no 'man' in my answer!

18a: I think the first part of your answer (whose def is last 4 words) is the "ally" and "yielding" is the word less v for volume.

9d: well, your man could be a 50s term for a jazz fan. and your Scots descendant could be a grandchild.

how did you figure out which answers go on the left/right of the grid?
